Foster Success is Indiana’s only statewide organization working to support teens and young adults as they transition out of foster care in five impact areas, including Educational Success.Join us for our first educator’s conference, Changing the Story: Improving Education Outcomes for Students in Foster Care. We often find that for students experiencing foster care, when they are able to maintain enrollment in the same school, your classroom and building are the most constant things in their lives. As you are working to support students in foster care, we want to make sure you know about the many resources available to you, your colleagues, and the students you are supporting.

This session focuses on creating brain-aligned discipline practices built on distinguishing between co-regulation and coercive regulation.  In discussing the history of disciplinary practices used in urban high school settings, we must reflect on how the effects of these practices, while created to ensure the success of all students, have disproportionately penalized minority students for infractions that may be better managed using brain-aligned strategies. Our ultimate goal is to become trauma-responsive practitioners, so we need to reexamine how we approach the topic of discipline while continuing to foster strong relationships between educators and students.
